How to Improve the Efficiency of Your Hot Water System

With energy prices soaring and the environmental need to conserve energy on everyone's minds, many people are looking for ways to make their hot water units more efficient. Here are some tips that can help.

1. Clean Your Hot Water Unit

A clean hot water unit works much more efficiently than a dirty one. Clean the valves and pipes regularly and look for signs of rust appearing on the unit. If you can see rust forming around the valves or pipes, then it is possible that there is rust building up inside the unit. In that case, you should hire a hot water plumber to clean and flush the unit for you.

2. Service Your Hot Water Unit Regularly

Whenever you notice any problems with the way your hot water unit functions, you should call a hot water plumber right away rather than continuing to use the unit and hoping that it won't get worse. Maintenance is essential to keep your hot water unit working as efficiently as possible. Dealing with problems as they arise also reduces the risk of the unit breaking down completely, leaving you with no hot water until you can get a plumber to come out and fix it.

3. Insulate Hot Water Pipes

Hot water pipes lose heat as it radiates away from them. The wastage of this heat energy can increase your home's total energy consumption, pushing up your bills and having an impact on the environment. You can reduce heat loss by wrapping insulating foam around all of your home's hot water pipes. Find this foam at a hardware store, along with temperature-resistant tape to hold it in place.

4. Look Out for Leaks

While you are insulating the pipes, look for signs of a leak anywhere in your hot water system. These signs include wet patches, mould or damaged or discoloured plaster close to the pipes. Leaks not only cause water damage but also reduce the efficiency of your hot water system.

5. Upgrade Your Hot Water Unit

If your hot water unit is very old, it is probably nowhere near as efficient as a new model. It might be time to think about replacing the unit, particularly if it frequently breaks down and needs repairs. Replacing an old hot water unit with a new one can save you money by decreasing the amount of energy you use to heat water for your home.

About Me

Installing a New Hot Water System in Your Home Hello! My name is Carl. I live in the city of Sydney, Australia. I recently moved into an older property which has many period features. Unfortunately, it also had a period hot water system. This hot water system was so old, it barely functioned at all. I soon got tired of taking cold showers in the morning so I decided to call in a plumber. He did a great job of installing a modern hot water system which now means I can enjoy a steaming hot shower every morning. I'm that impressed with his work, I decided to learn more about plumbing and start a blog.
