Is Your Blocked Drain Problem Simple or Complex?

If you wander down the aisles of a home improvement store, you may see a range of products that are designed to help unblock drains. You may come across several harsh chemicals, plunging tools, flexible wires and other miraculous inventions and may be tempted to try them out if you've got a problem at home. However, it can be difficult to know exactly where the problem lies, and if it is quite a distance from your sink, you will need a lot more help. What should you do in this situation?

Simple or Complex

Sometimes, a blockage can occur in the "U" bend that's just beneath the sink. Particles of food can build up over time and can harden, leading to an eventual backup. Certainly, a flexible wire, plunger or chemical solution could work in this situation, but the blockage may be deep underground.

Underground Threats

When the water disappears down the plughole, it has to travel through a subterranean pipe until it reaches the public sewer. This pipe will run beneath your garden, and problems can sometimes arise. For example, if it has been either particularly dry or very wet, then the soil can shift, and this can cause the pipe to split. It may no longer connect to the public sewer when it does so, and your wastewater will have nowhere to go. Alternatively, tree roots can occasionally penetrate a pipe in search of needed moisture, and, once again, this can lead to a blockage.

Specialist Equipment Needed

In these situations, you will need to call in a professional plumber with the right tools to locate the issue as quickly as possible – and with the minimum of disruption. They can send a miniature camera with a powerful light down into the pipe. The camera will be connected to a terminal aboveground and pinpoint the problem area with high precision. The plumber may then be able to use high-powered water jets to clear the blockage, but if this is not possible, they will at least know where to access it without having to dig up large areas of your garden.

The Quickest Path to a Solution

As you can imagine, no amount of harsh chemicals or extremely long, flexible wire will work in a situation like this. So if you're worried about blocked drains, you should call in a plumber as soon as possible to get a professional opinion.

About Me

Installing a New Hot Water System in Your Home Hello! My name is Carl. I live in the city of Sydney, Australia. I recently moved into an older property which has many period features. Unfortunately, it also had a period hot water system. This hot water system was so old, it barely functioned at all. I soon got tired of taking cold showers in the morning so I decided to call in a plumber. He did a great job of installing a modern hot water system which now means I can enjoy a steaming hot shower every morning. I'm that impressed with his work, I decided to learn more about plumbing and start a blog.
